Biography

Kari Hoglund is an interdisciplinary artist from the northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She is a graduate of Slippery Rock University with a BFA degree in dance with a concentration in performance and choreography. In her collegiate dance career, she has gotten to work with faculty and guest artists such as Jenna Riegel, Jennifer Keller, Jesse Factor, Lindsay Viatori, Marta Renzi, and Nina Martin. Kari has had the privilege of performing historical pieces like Bill T. Jones’s, D-Man in The Waters, restaged by Jenna Riegel, and Martha Graham’s, Celebration, restaged by Jesse Factor.

Over the past few years, Kari’s passion for improvisational movement, Contact Improvisation (CI), and choreography has grown tremendously. She spent time in New York City researching improvisational movement at MODULE, a workshop under the facilitation of choreographer Sidra Bell. She has visited many Contact Improvisation jams across the USA and the UK and has developed a passion for advocating for consent and accessibility in all settings. During her semester abroad at the University of Roehampton in London, UK, Kari was able to immerse herself in the CI community to further develop her skills as a practitioner and facilitator for the Slippery Rock University Department of Dance Contact Improvisation jams. These experiences lead her to develop and later present her research on consent culture at several academic conferences.

Kari has also pursued her passion for dance film by playing the roles of director, editor, cinematographer, and performer for a variety of solo and collaborative projects. Her other films and roles in which she played include Where Love Leads (2018) as performer, directed by Marta Renzi; EyeSeaBliss (2019) as co-director, editor, and cinematographer; Sweet Sense (2020) as performer and editor, directed by Jennifer Keller; Repurposed (2020) as performer, directed by Lindsay Viatori; Cusp as editor, and cinematographer, directed by Emma Morrison; Secondary Surfaces Rendered/Vertical (2021) as performer and editor, directed by Nina Martin, among shooting and editing several of her peer’s work at Slippery Rock University.

Outside of the dance studio Kari has many hobbies including drawing/painting, running, reading, hiking, and playing with her pet rats, Pina and Twyla (of course named after dance legends, Pina Bausch and Twyla Tharp).
